The subtitle explained: “A Book for Believers and Skeptics alike.”
It seems that the authors of this word of God today would have benefitted from this book.
The Lordspoke to Ahaz, telling him to ask for a sign from God.
But God said more: “Let it be deep as the nether world, or high as the sky!”
There were practically no limits as to how big a sign or how expansive it could be.
But Ahaz, apparently, believed in a God that was small and not too capable.
His worry: “I will not ask! I will not tempt the Lord.”
But the Lord gave a sign anyway. A special son would be born: “Emmanuel.”
God would dwell as he never had before, and this would be salvific; the divine would enter the human in a life-changing way.
We would never be the same. Love would conquer sin and death. The limited and mortal would become eternal and immortal.
When the “King of Glory” enters and the “Key of David” opens, watch out!
And so, of course, an “angelic” and “supernatural” event announced and introduced and welcomed this “Emmanuel-to-be” moment in time when all would become “something more”; again, we would never be the same.
“Let the Lord enter; he is the King of Glory!”
+ How big is your/our God?
How small is your/our God?
Are there limits as to how much your/our God can reach into our deepest spirit and love us into a new reality?
Believers and skeptics alike, let us be as surprised as Mary, Ahaz, and countless others before us; and, surely, to come after us.
