A reflection on the daily readings, for the Feast of St. John, apostle and evangelist, by Father Perry.
+ There is a lot of “seeing” in the scriptures today.
What is not clear is exactly what was seen.
John‘s letter talks about “seeing” the word of life that was made “visible” to him.
That word made flesh made visible the life that is the eternal life which has caused us to have fellowship — fellowship with that life!
+ An empty tomb with the wrappings of death visible, but not the body, gave enough reason to simply “see and believe.”
We grapple with the deep mystery of true life — inner life — that gives meaning to the simply mortal.
Surely, there is more than the simply mortal.
And when we grapple with empty tombs, new life and resurrection, love conquering sin and death, and a fellowship that has lasted for more than 2,000 years, we are grappling with some extraordinary issues and truths that go far deeper than what we literally see or don’t see to “seeing” issues and truths that go to the very meaning of life and existence.
In fact, it leads us to the conviction that there is a deeper life that the Lord of life has led us to discover.
We call it “seeing,” “finding,” or “discovering” the kingdom of God.
And for sure, that is “within.”
