A reflection on the daily readings, for Friday of the Second Week in Ordinary Time, by Father Perry.
+ In the musical “West Side Story” about two rival gangs in New York, a beautiful song sung between a couple made up from the rival gangs in the story, the “West Side Story,” longingly hopes:
“Some day,
Somewhere,
We’ll find a new way of living,
We’ll find a way of forgiving.
Somewhere,
Somewhere …”
+ Or as Psalm 85 in today’s liturgy says it: “Kindness and truth shall meet; justice and peace shall kiss. Truth shall spring out of the earth and justice shall look down from heaven.”
At every glance of the word today — and we could say in every syllable that is written — there is hopefulness.
There is promise of a new Covenant — a lasting and unbreakable Covenant — a Covenant that will be written not on parchment but in the hearts of all. The Old Covenant will be obsolete, for the New Covenant will be “enacted on better promises.”
The New Covenant will also be found in the word and in the Word made flesh!
It will be a Covenant of Blood — the Blood of the Cross. In him, indeed, “justice and peace shall kiss.”
And so, in that moment in time — and in that person, in that promise given — and now being lived.
That Jesus the Christ chose disciples, 12 of them whom he also called Apostles — who would not only, as disciples, listen and learn from him, he would send them forth to preach and drive out demons and invite others to know the Kingdom of God sent from above.
“Some day,
Somewhere,
We’ll find a new way of living,
We’ll find a way of forgiving.
Somewhere,
Somewhere …”.
It is the Life that brings the Light to forever!
