+ A variety of words seem to pop out of the readings today and even out of the celebration.
The first one that comes to mind in the first reading is “noble.”
It is not written down, but it seems to enflesh the entire readings.
The words even speak the difference between those “souls of the just who are in the hand of God without any torment,” and those who look at the dead; instead of seeing them eternally at rest and in peace with God, and cared for and loved by God and treated with noble blessing, they appear “to be dead” — finished, done!
It is a remarkable sight to behold, this noble description of those now resting in peace.
Our psalm — the famous Psalm 23 — speaks of being led into and through verdant pastures and on right paths; safe, secure, protected from evil, though in valleys of darkness absolutely fearless, anointed and loved, enjoying refreshing waters, and dwelling peacefully and loved in the house of the Lord.
“Who’s afraid of the big bad wolf?” is not the song being sung.
No! More likely it is, “be not afraid — I go before you always.”
We die with Christ — and, therefore, do not fear it. And we also rise with Christ into a forever life; and death has no more power over us!
Jesus identifies with eternal life and promises it to us, and gently calls us “to follow him.”
