Now that’s an interesting phrase and an interesting image. But really, doesn’t it actually make great sense? Hearts that are really alive see and hear and understand — they are truly enlightened. And such enlightened hearts have us to become the “Holy Ones” (Col. 1:3–4; Phlm. 4–5.) who, because we believe, possess the “surpassing greatness of his power” (2 Cor. 13:4; Col. 1:11; 2:12.).
Clearly, Paul was elated with the spirit and glory of the churches emerging after years of preaching and teaching Christ to them. But let’s face it — it all began with Jesus the Christ; it was he who challenged his disciples and followers and the curious to acknowledge him before others as the Son of Man. That being done, Jesus would likewise acknowledge them before “the angels of God.”
And to respect the Holy Spirit was essential, so that the works of the Holy Spirit would be alive and stay alive, and provide even the wisdom necessary if and when they (those followers) might be taken before “synagogues and before rulers and authorities” (Mk. 21:12–15; Mt. 10:17–20; Mk. 13:11)
Jesus knew clearly that the day would come when his followers would pay the price and go through their sufferings simply because they believed and taught their Christ. The fruits of all that Jesus was saying and asking of them were now, years later, being fulfilled in the works of St. Paul throughout the churches in the hearts of those who came to truly see and hear, and understand!
