A reflection on the daily readings, for Wednesday of the 34th Week in Ordinary Time, by Father Perry.

+ Another Sign! Yikes! Great and awe-inspiring! Yikes! Then 7 (yes, 7) angels, with 7 (yes, 7) plagues! Yikes!
Then the beast, and victory over the beast, and fire and harps and songs, and the song of Moses, and the song of the Lamb. Yikes! And yet it all ends with praise and glory and victory, and resolves with a definite proclamation of your holiness — dear God, for —
“All the nations will come
and worship before you,
for your righteous acts have been revealed.”
This crazy Book of Revelation just can’t say and do enough to seek to scare the heebie jeebies out of us and into us. Yikes! But what to expect from our thoughts about the end times? We simply must be ready; not only on the last day, but right now, now, now!
And Jesus gives his own version of the end times; but no matter how bad it gets, even if —
“You will even be handed over by parents, brothers, relatives, and friends, and they will put some of you to death.
But a hair on your head will be destroyed.”
Well, will it or won’t it? Make up your mind! Crazy language. Crazy descriptions of a crazy time. End times!
But the alleluia verse repeats its gentle promise and advice —
“Remain faithful until death,
and I will give you the crown of life.”
And the psalm just can’t praise this just God — this loving God — enough! —
“Great and wonderful are all your works, Lord, mighty God!”
End times!
Yikes!
