L.A. Opera presents ‘Jonah and the Whale’ at the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels

March 17, 2018 from 7:30 pm to 9:00 pm

The Los Angeles Opera Company joins with the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels and several other community and school groups to produce the newly-commissioned community opera “Jonah and the Whale” by composer Jack Perla and librettist Velina Hasu Houston.

The opera will be conducted by L.A. Opera’s James Conlon and directed by Eli Villanueva.

“Jonah and the Whale” dramatizes one of the best known stories from the Old Testament, in which God asks Jonah to prophesy to the sinful people of Nineveh. Jonah refuses and attempts to flee by sea and is thrown overboard in a storm. A great fish swallows him, but Jonah emerges safely after he agrees to fulfill God’s orders.

This unique program has a playful yet intense focus, offering individual attention and peer collaboration that culminates in community performances at the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels in downtown Los Angeles.
