God’s love is something entirely unique

A reflection on the daily readings, for the Solemnity of the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus, by Father Perry.

Today, we celebrate the Solemnity of the Most Sacred Heart, and we say that the Lord Jesus is recognized by us as sacred.
And yet, this first reading from Deuteronomy says quite clearly that “We are a people sacred to the Lord, your God.”
Is this an example of what we hear in the scriptures when it talks about God abiding in us and we abiding in God?
This love of God is something entirely unique. And John tells us clearly: “In this is love: not that we have loved God, but that he loved us.”
It is for that reason, if we ever learn that lesson, that we therefore should love one another.
He has done it. He has shown us. We have received it.
We must learn how to give it and live it. And in that way God remains in us.
And if we intentionally learn, know and accept that, then we know and can confirm the words and teaching of John: “This is how we know that we remain in him and he in us, that he has given us of his spirit.”
And are we the little ones — as opposed to the wise and learned — that accept, know, live this, and are forever changed and blessed by this word of God?
